Kilim is word of Turkish origin which signifies a no pile rug produced by flat-weaving method. These rugs are mostly produced in Turkey – predominantly Anatolia – Afghanistan, Pakistan, Central Asia and China. For this reason, you may sometime include them in oriental rugs category as well.

We differentiate the kilim area rug with a traditional rug is that the traditional rug is mostly knotted onto the warps and held together by pressing the wefts firmly while kilim is prepared by interweaving the variously colored wefts and warps, thus creating what is known as a flat weave.
These rugs are mostly woven with the slit-weave technique. The slit means to the gap left between two blocks of color. Weavers pack the weft tightly to completely cover the warp and often favor diagonal patterns to avoid weakening the structure of the rug with vertical slits. It produces bold, sharp patterns that weavers enjoy creating with more freedom allowed than a plain-weave. This is also why kilims are so closely associated with geometrical designs even though there are kilims with floral designs as well.
For manufacturing the Kilim rug, a loom, a beating comb, and scissors are the simple tools required with wool as the primary material. Cotton, silk and animal hair (goat, camel, or horse) are also sometimes used, mostly in conjunction with wool. Gold or silver thread, beads, and other small decorative baubles that strike the weaver’s fancy are also sometimes inserted into the design, but not very often.
Kilim are sometimes used as hangings, some are bench coverings, bags or mule saddles.
